FORT WORTH -- A Fort Worth police officer was arrested Friday, accused of assaulting a female acquaintance, then leaving the scene before officers could arrive.

Stephen R.Vega, who has been with the department almost 18 years, turned himself in to the Tarrant County Jail Friday morning on warrants for assault with bodily injury and official oppression. He was accompanied by his attorney, according to a release by the police department.

Police had been called to a disturbance in the 2600 block of West 7th Street shortly before 9 a.m. Monday involving a report of an altercation between a Fort Worth officer and a 38-year-old woman.

“The two parties are acquaintances; the altercation escalated into a physical struggle prompting a call to police,” the release states.
