Officer Edward Berzins
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A township police officer was arrested by Pennsylvania authorities Monday on charges he repeatedly exposed himself via a webcam to someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl, officials said.
Officer Edward Berzins, 37, of Blackwood, began speaking with an undercover agent, who was posing as a 13-year-old girl, on April 19 through Yahoo! Instant Messenger, said Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett.
The two met in a Music section chat room, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Berzins, using the screen name "kickinbaknchillin," told the girl he was a 21-year-old from Philadelphia. When the "girl" said she was 13, Berzins responded "lol ooooooooooo youngin haha its cool jus as long as ur cool."
During the chat, Berzins asked the girl for a picture of herself and allowed her to access his webcam. Berzins was sitting in his chair with a baseball hat and no shirt and discussed dropping his boxers, according to the affidavit.
On April 23, Berzins instant-messaged the "girl" and asked for another picture. The girl told Berzins she was in 8th grade. He again granted the "girl" access to his webcam, where he stood up and revealed he was not wearing any clothes, the affidavit states.
According to the affidavit, Berzins told the "girl" he felt like masturbating.
Berzins also exposed himself twice over his webcam on April 24. During the second occasion, he masturbated, the affidavit states.
Berzins was charged with unlawful contact with a minor, criminal attempted obscene and sexual performances and criminal use of a computer.
All three are third-degree felonies, each punishable by up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
Berzins waived extradition and was taken to Dauphin County Prison on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 21.
The Gloucester Township Police Department declined immediate comment.
