BARTOW — A 42-year-old instructor for the Polk Sheriff’s STAR program was arrested Thursday on a battery charge stemming from a June 8 argument in which she used a steak knife to cut her ex-boyfriend, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
Tonya Yvonne Williams, of Lakeland, was charged with aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and has been suspended from work without pay, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Travis Marcel Rowe, 37, of Lakeland, was in the Polk County Jail on an unrelated grand theft and criminal mischief charges when he asked to speak to a deputy Wednesday about the June 8 argument he had with Williams.
Williams, a 12-year veteran, visited Rowe at his job on South Combee Road in Lakeland and parked her vehicle in front of his to stop him from leaving, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The two started arguing. Williams grabbed a steak knife that was in her car and stabbed Rowe in his left forearm, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The knife handle broke off from the blade and the blade was left in Rowe’s arm, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Williams and Rowe both told sheriff’s deputies during interviews that Williams offered to take Rowe to the hospital, but he refused.
Williams threw the knife’s handle in her car, then drove away after the argument, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A witness told deputies he saw the argument, then saw Rowe wrap a white towel around his arm that was soon covered in blood, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Williams later told deputies in an interview that she cleaned the car and threw the knife handle away.
Williams was working as a TAC (teacher/advisor/counselor) instructor for the former juvenile boot camp and made $49,657 a year, the Sheriff’s Office said.
