The city of Brenham later allowed Merkley to “retire,” instead of being terminated by the police department. The city of Brenham paid Merkley $7000.00 as part of a settlement agreement if Merkley didn’t sue the city.

Joe Merkley Admits to Sexual harassment and Destroying Government Records to Cover His Ass
A woman came forward in 2017 and accused Joe Merkley of sexually harassing her. When Merkley was confronted over the allegations, Merkley turned the tables and said it was he who was the victim of sexual harassment from the woman.
Officer Merkley admitted that he made inappropriate comments of a sexual nature to the woman while on duty using a city owned cell phone an desktop computer. Officer Merkley also admitted to destroying the text messages and emails to cover his tracks of the relationship with the woman.
Deleting government documents is a FELONY!
The city of Brenham took no legal action for the crime.
